Lower Condensing Temperatures: Cooling towers cool water by taking advantage of the latent heat of evaporation, which is a very efficient process. This allows them to reject heat to a lower temperature (the ambient wet-bulb temperature) than an air-cooled system can (which is limited by the higher ambient dry-bulb temperature).

Reduces Chiller Workload: In a chiller system, the lower the temperature of the water coming into the condenser, the less hard the chiller's compressor has to work. This dramatically reduces electricity consumption. Water-cooled chiller systems with cooling towers typically operate at 0.5-0.6 kW/ton, compared to 0.9-1.3 kW/ton for air-cooled systems.

Stable Performance in High Ambients: While efficiency does drop on hot, humid days, the performance drop is less severe than with air-cooled systems. A cooling tower's output is based on wet-bulb temperature, which is generally lower and more stable than the dry-bulb temperature that air-cooled systems depend on.

Protects the Chiller: By providing a stable stream of cool condenser water, the cooling tower allows the chiller to operate under optimal, less stressful conditions. Chiller Indoors, Tower Outdoors: The system is split. The noisy, bulky chiller can be located in an interior mechanical room, saving valuable exterior or roof space for other uses.

Smaller Chiller Footprint: Because the condenser is water-cooled and doesn't require a large coil and fan array, the chiller unit itself is more compact than an equivalent air-cooled chiller.

Towers Can Be Versatile: Cooling towers can be installed on rooftops, at grade level, or even as part of a building's architectural design. There are various types (crossflow, counterflow) to fit different space constraints.

Cost-Effectiveness for Large Systems

Lower Initial Cost per Ton of Cooling: For systems larger than approximately 400 tons, the combined cost of a water-cooled chiller and a cooling tower is often lower per ton than installing an air-cooled chiller system. This, combined with the massive operational savings, makes the lifecycle cost far superior.
