A Carrier water-cooled chiller is a centralized cooling system that uses a vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycle to remove heat from a liquid (typically water or a water-glycol mixture). This chilled liquid is then pumped through a building to air handlers or fan coils to provide air conditioning. The defining feature of a "water-cooled" system is that it uses water to reject the heat it collects from the building, as opposed to air.

Higher Efficiency: Water is a much better heat transfer medium than air. This allows the condenser to operate at a lower temperature, which reduces the work the compressor has to do. This results in a significantly lower kW/ton (the primary measure of chiller efficiency).
Longer Lifespan: Because the condenser is not exposed to the outdoor air (like an air-cooled chiller is), it is protected from the elements and corrosion. Water-cooled chillers often last 20+ years, sometimes over 30 with proper maintenance.
Quieter Operation: The noisy components (the compressor and condenser fans) are located inside a mechanical room. The cooling tower, located outside, is generally quieter than the large fans on an air-cooled chiller.
Stable Performance: Less affected by extreme outdoor ambient temperatures than air-cooled systems, making them more consistent and reliable in hot climates.
Smaller Footprint: The chiller unit itself is more compact than an equivalent air-cooled chiller, as it doesn't need a large air-cooled condenser coil and fans.
